How can I align the hexagon-to-hexagon attachment of these polys? Is there any general procedures for more types of polys in this function? thanks! :D

The "Poly->Put Models on Faces" option doesn't have much control over orientation. But if you are matching faces of the same type, you can use "Poly->Augment Polyhedron" instead (or just hit "a"). Start by putting the model to be added in a memory slot ("Edit->Put Model in Memory" or type "m1"), then load the central model, hit "a", and select the memory slot in the top section. Hit OK.

During the augmentation preview, you can use Ctrl+Shift+Left-mouse-drag to move the augmented parts out from the central part, if you want a gap. Then hit Enter when you're happy with the result.

Thank you so much! it works. Btw, is it possible to tune the transparency and lighting effects? thanks

There isn't much control over lighting, just face colouring.

Thanks for your reply. Btw, I have another question that if I want to pack the poly in a circle, there is inherently a small gap. I wonder if there is a way to introduce some angular distortion for these constitute polys so that the gaps can be filled and I can measure these dihedral angles after distortion. Thanks

There's no easy way to close that gap I'm afraid.
