Fixed Polychoron Slicing

Post by _Geometer »

Sometimes, slicing a polychoron to certain depths (usually where vertices are found) and setting that section to the base model will result in it having "no symmetry", regardless of the symmetry of the axis sliced through. Is this something that can be fixed?

Can you provide some specific examples? The simpler the better.

Do the faces of the slice visit vertices more than once maybe? That makes it ambiguous as to how to traverse them, so if faces of the same type get traversed in different ways, then overall it may lead to no symmetry. But I'm just guessing. It can probably be fixed, but Stella's a bit in limbo until I pull it all back together, and I'm distracted by too many other projects at the moment. I'd really like to get a new release out though!

The one specific case I remember is Sidphippixhi down a dodecahedral axis at a depth of ~0.127322. I've seen this elsewhere, but don't remember which polychora do this.
The slice does seem to be itself degenerate.

OK thanks, I've made a note to look into it, but might be a while
